Papers, 1953-1983 (inclusive).

Collection contains Johnston's poems and essays on racial discrimination and civil rights, and an autobiography. Writings contain later (ca. 1983) comments by Johnston regarding circumstances in which they were written, and how some were circulated as anti-segregation documents. Also included is a photograph of Johnston and a brochure advertising her book "The Development of Negro Religion."

Ruby Funchess Johnston was born October 23, 1916, in Lamar, South Carolina. She attended South Carolina State College in Orangeburg (A.B., 1953), Atlanta University (A.M., 1938) and Radcliffe College and Harvard University (A.M., 1948). She studied under W.E.B. DuBois at Atlanta University. She taught English and sociology at schools and colleges in South Carolina and Florida, and published two books about African American religion.
